How We Walk Matters!
Most people don’t think about how they walk. They put one foot in front of the other and go on their way. Walking is one of the most natural things that humans do each day. Or is it? The way we walk in modern society is causing stress on our joints, back problems, foot pain, and more. We need to go back to the way our bodies were designed to walk if we want to lead the healthiest possible life. Dr. William Lee at the Mindful Orthopedic Institute has helped countless patients re-learn the right way to walk, which is how our bodies evolved to move. It’s called Deliberate Walking, and it might just change your life.
The “normal” heel-toe walking gait used by most people today represents a way of walking that we've adopted to accommodate shoes. Over time, this way of walking causes problems with our feet, knees, hips, spine and overall wellness. Deliberate Walking (DW) is a method of walking with shoes that simulates habitual barefoot walking (HBW). We have found that many spinal and lower extremity musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions improve or can be successfully managed by helping patients change to Deliberate Walking. In addition to reducing pain, improving energy efficiency and activity levels, Deliberate Walking promotes mindfulness, which positively affects mood, affect, emotions and attitude.
